Or the AC isn't listening to the thermostat. I had a Honeywell T87F with a cool on/off switch and a fan on/auto switch. The AC would not shut down when the temp went below the setting. I replaced this thermostat with a Rite-Temp 8022c and the same problem persists! I can turn on the AC, turn it off, but there is no apparent thermostatic control! I replicated the wiring from the old Tstat to the new one. Is it possible that the Tstat is send a message to shut down and the ac isn't listening? The AC setup is a air handler and a compressor.

Both indoor fan and outdoor unit is not shutting down after it goes below room set point temp?
For it to stop, you have to bump up the temp, or turn switch from cool to off?

Might check the 24V wire to the units from the tstat. Also check if the contactor in the outdoor unit is stuck. See if you have a time delay in the unit it could be stuck also.

Both indoor and outdoor units continue to run after the temp meets and passes the shut off point. The only way to stop it is to turn the switch from cool to off

on the new t-stat, how cold does it get before you go and shut it off? (room temp, and set temp)

3-4 degrees difference. Will have it set at 81 and it gets down to 78, no response.

Play with the temp swing, and see what it's set at.. I'd move it up to 2.

I put it to 85 and the air temp was 79, still no response. Kinda like my wife come to think of it.

Ok, remove the t-stat, and touch the R-G-Y wires.. Both indoor and out door unit should come on. Let it run for 5 min or so... then undo it.
If they all stop right a way, then it's the t-stat. Maybe just out of bad luck you had another t-stat that got stuck.
You are best to get a Honeywell T-stat. it's going to be far better than the Rite-temp, Lux, or Hunter t-stat for temp control.

Thanks Jay. I'll try that. Curious, If it isn't the tstat then what is it?
