Flooring Tile - Ceramic tile floor (Bathroom)

I have a bathroom floor that was tiled (ceramic) and I chiseled it out. I am now left with the original concrete bed with steel mesh. One end of the floor is 1/4 inch lower that the other end. Can I just level it with thin-set as I re-tile the floor? So basically I would tile over the original bed, which is solid, with thin-set & ceramic tiles. Is this OK?

P.S. When cutting the tile around a heat register, do the tile go under it or but up to it?

Hi Joe,

You can tile over the old concrete bed if it's in good shape as you say. If it's important to you to get the floor level you should use either an SLC (self leveling cement) or a patching cement. Thinset is too difficult to do that with because it's sticky and not made for that purpose.

Thank you JAZMAN, how about the heat register, do you tile up to it, or under it? I'm assuming around it.

Is it a baseboard circulating hydronic heat? If there is enough room tile under it too. But remember you need air-space under it for it to work properly. I don't know how much space is best, maybe 1 1/2 or more? Call a heating guy or the company that makes them.
