Greetings from New Hampshire,
My 8k btu window unit, new at the start of summer, has recently began building up with ice all over the inside coils and parts. Hence, when this happens, it only seems to work like a fan and not an AC. Any ideas how to get the cold air coming out again? Do I just shut it and let it all melt then restart it ?
THANKS.

Have you cleaned the filter latley?
Also if the filter is clean what is the outside temp when it freezes ?
You may have to take it outside and remove the cabinet and hose the coils out good. Just be sure and avoid getting the electrical parts wet. Then let it dry for several hours to a day before putting it back in the window.
If none of that works they are disposables now a days and time for a new one.

outide temps have been 90's and very humid. I also will clean the filter this morning, it is a washable mesh fiber material type. when i removed the filter, the coils (right behind the filter, looks like a car radiator) were iced over and also the copper tubing to the sides.
thanks for any input. it was a big box store special.

I'd say it may be low on charge, Call in on the warranity info that came with your unit, and see what they can do for you.

I have the exact same problem. See my recent post. Only thing is, my AC is brand new, only used at most four times. So, is this a problem with unit? It is, of course, still under warranty.

garyrt That new and ice first thing if the fan runs will be low on freon. Take it back in where you got it

Sorry about the post in this thread, but the situation was identical to mine.
I will just have to have it serviced, it is way too heavy for me to even move. It's a 28,000 BTU unit. I did use it yesterday with no ice build up at all. But, it was not as hot as it was the other day when I had the ice problem.
