What type of prep work should I expect in order to install 3/4" solid hardwoods over a OSB subfloor where carpet once was? Obviously I need to remove the carpet, padding and tack strips, what else do I need to plan for? The house is only about 2.5 years old so everything should be on good shape. Do I need worry about measuring for levelness? Seems like if the floor was level for the carpet then it should be ok for the hardwoods.

Thanks for any recommendations, trying to get this done before the holidays so I have time but want to start planning now.

As far as I know, carpet has no level requirements, it will cover about anything. LOL! Your hardwood flooring manufacturer may a spec for how much out of level there product can tolerate. General prep and install info is downloadable from industry sources such as the Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association:

When we installed hardwood in our new home (during construction) we belt sanded (by hand, but larger units can be rented) to insure all the little mounds and glops of stuff were gone. This also showed that some of the premium OSB used for the flooring was a little out at the joints, so sanding smoothed this out as well.

So I take it you are saying I need to plan, and allow time, to do some form of prep work. Including sanding down some high spots and various other clean up work?

Thanks
