Hi,
I am brand new to this forum, but it looks like the community here is very knowledgeable. It's an extremely hot day in Virginia Beach, VA -- and my Trane XE 800 air conditioner died sometime ago. I wasn't in the house, but when I came back I noticed things had suddenly gotten very hot.
I've looked at a few things already:
all the breakers have been reset (hell, I reset the main breaker for the whole house just to be safe). Everything was tested to make sure the Air Conditioner was receiving power.
I was reading a recent thread on an air conditioner that wasn't turning on for someone else, so I turned off the power to the air conditioner for the moment using the breaker switch that is outside and very close to the air conditioner.
I had read that it's possible that some kind of relay/circuit might be dead... but when I look at it, things seem okay?
Please help .. I'm literally sweating bullets =(. And no one can even come to repair this air conditioner till Wednesday .. blargh =\.
thank you for your help in advance! I'll be eagerly awaiting replies ...

I went ahead and flipped the breaker immediately next to the air conditioner to the on position again..
I tested for ac voltage going into the box, and it appears things are up and running. I'm getting 118 volts from the ground terminal to a number of the other terminals. My multimeter seems to indicate that something is happening in the back over there, but neither the fan nor the compressor is turning on.
hmph

what voltage do you read from one wire to the other inside the breaker box at the outdoor unit? It should be 240 volts or close to it.

When I test one of the input lines and the ground, I see 118 volts .. I might be testing the wrong lines though .... (I never saw more than 118 volts (ac) )...

It should be 220 to the unit. Check each hot to ground and then check hot to hot. You should have 110 on each hot wire to ground and 220 on hot to hot. If you get 110 on both hots to ground and only 110 hot to hot, you are backfeeding one leg and something is wrong at the breaker or a bad fuse.
If you have a disconnect switch, you will need to check the fuses. Either check the power before and after the fuse OR turn the breaker off inside and ohm the fuses.
