Can a DIYer install an alarm system in a single-family dwelling? I have a good knowledge of house wiring procedures and codes.

I would say yes. The installation is quite easy and it is all low voltage wiring. Many systems utilize wireless contacts, motions, smokes, etc. to make installation easier. The hard part is PROGRAMMING. Programmin the devices to work together, delays, what numbers the panel will call, if any. Just make sure you buy a panel that is easy to program and that you buy the keypad that is needed for programming. In my opinion, the GE concord 4 system is one of the easiest panels to program--it is menu driven. Good luck.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will search for a vendor.

I bought mine online - spent under $200. IMO running the wire and hooking up all the devices was simple enough. Where I ran into trouble was programming the key pad :wall: I spent more time working on that part than I did the rest of it

That was 2 yrs ago and the system has worked great.

As a newbie in this field who has now installed two alarms as a DIY'er in the last year, one a DSC 832 and the other a Vista 20P with a combination of wired and wireless devices.

Sure, I had a few minor difficulties with the fine points of the programming but with the help of several on this forum including MrRonFL, Sam and others I was able to overcome the glitches.

I would absolutely say "go for it" as you will find it rewarding and challenging. The experts on this forum will easily help you overcome any problems.
