I want to hook my PS3 to the computer but I only have on eternet connection on both the computer and on the cable modem.
Can I buy a splitter and if so were would I hook into the modem or computer?

I'm not familiar with how the PS3 works, but you could just get a router/switch and connect computer and PS3 to that? You should be able to access the PS3 through file sharing, but I'm not sure.
