Newbie to any type of DIY. A/C unit oustide is making a screaching noise when the fan is turned on and the fan is not turning. After I let it sit for a miunte or so, the fan will cut on, no problem. Have not tried anything yet, just looking for an alternative before I call a repair company. Could it be a belt slipping?

if its the outside unit there are no belts. you say the fan does not turn. next time take a LONG stick or screw driver and give the blades a turn CCW(counter clockwise) and see if it starts. if its hard to turn then it could be the bearings are bad and you need a new motor.

Is it a squirrel cage motor on the fan? If so, the squirrel's just wanting out! Bwahahaha :)

Sorry, I don't have a better answer than flirty1, but I couldn't resist.

If you have a older package unit (everything is outside and only ductwork goes to the house no refrigerant lines) it may possibly have a belt driven fan. Not sure what you have there so post back and let everyone know. It sure is fun to guess but might be able to help you a bit more with some additional info.

Isn't that what motors begin to sound like when they've never been oiled?

Is the outdoor fan coming on at all while you are hearing the screaching sound?? If not it is your compressor screaming for help.

Like said if the fan is not running and it should be take a small stick and give it a push. If it starts up then your capacitor needs replaced if the fan resists or don't do anything the the fan motor is likely shot.
