There are some uneven boards that do not sand enough to be flat so there are some spots where the old finish did not sand off.

1. I can get these with the hand sander but any tricks for going through the 3 grades of sand paper for these spots? If I hand sand with the course grit I'll probably not be able to find these later to hand sand at medium and fine grit.

2. If I miss a few will having the old finish cause problems when I put on the new finish? I'm planning to use water based polyurethane.
