My kitchen wall hood has a deep vertical scratch right in the front of the chimney casing. How can I remove it? I read that Bar Keepers Friend (sp?) is for cosmetic, minor scratches, and that rubbing/polish compound (auto body kind) and some wet 600 grit paper could work. I can easily access up to 1500 grit sandpaper.

Deep scratches are impossible to remove from stainless. For smooth stainless, even minor scratches tend to be impossible to remove. Some report success with Home Depot's Scratch B Gone. Any attempts to repair scratch, make sure you rub along grain if you have a brushed finish.
