Finally, the perpetual basement build is coming to a close. One of the last items is to enclose the 6"x6" CCA columns with something a bit more presentable. The simple plan has been to build larger square boxes of 1"x8" plain pine and paint appropriately.

As is often the case, the original columns are not exactly straight, but twisted, so I am looking for some suggestions for getting good, solid mounting points that are square with the world despite the twist.

I would appreciate any help and my wife would *really* appreciate it if this only took one weekend...

It is a common problem with posts. First, determine the extreme width measurements taking the twist into consideration by using a 4 or 6' level. If it exceeds 7 1/2", you will have to go with a 1x10 and rip it accordingly to the proper width. Use shims behind the boards and install the boards plumb.
