Trane XL1000 - Heater turns on while Cooling is ON

Just recently purchased a house which is equipped with Trane XL 1000. We noticed that the heat would turn on while Thermostat setting was set to "Cool". Replaced the Thermostat thinking that's what was causing the issue (Replaced Trane Weathertron with Honeywell Brand) ... everything was fine for few days but same thing is happening again. Heat will turn on for few minutes and then the Just the Fan and eventually it will go back to cooling ....

Any thoughts on what might the issue be?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Can be the defrost board in the outside unit. Also check the 4 way valve in it

Isn't this normal operation for defrost mode in the winter time?

Sounds like the installer has some wires terminated in the wrong place. Either at the thermostat or the outdoor unit.

Happened to me twice. Not one single reputable instaler in my are when it comes to heat pumps. Thank god my brother-in-law is a wiz at reading ladder drawings...

On some of the electronic thermostats, honeywell for instance, there is a red LED that comes on when in heat mode to let you know the heat strips are ON. In the cooling mode the light ON indicates an issue with the performance of the unit which requires some type of service. The LED will go on and off at different times so it can make you think it is the heat strip. Check to see if the air coming out of the register is slightly cool or warm. Keep in mind that the moving air can fool you regarding the amount of heat or cool you have. If it is warm then it is probably the heat strips.
