I'm intend to install a split system heat pump myself. My question is can I substitute a gas furnace for backup instead of electric heating coils?

Yes. This will give you a dual fuel system. You will need a gas furnace preferably a two stg var speed model with matching evap coil. This will replace the need for an air handler.
