As can be the case, I've researched so much I think I'm in a labrynith and can't find the exit. Basically we are putting in a large deck 1300 square feet around a large pool in Phoenix, Arizona. Any pros have an opinion on what we should use?

Currently, I'm attracted to Procell and Tandeck. Plenty of positive info on Procell but I'm concerned about slip texture around pool and discoloration in hot climate (a post from lefty referenced this). Tandeck has a 50 year warranty and I found a claim that its base, Polyethylene (PE), is better than PVC (Procell). However, very little unbiased info on Tandeck can be found.

Lastly, in the Phoenix climate (hot and dry), should I be considering plastic or should I go with a good composite.

Any info or opinions are appreciated.

Anahder Prajek,

Welcome to DoItYourself.com and the Deck forum.

I'm not familiar with Tandeck. I'll do some research on see what I can come up with.

I've put down quite a few Pro Cell decks in this area, and out climate is a lot like your's in the summer -- hot and dry. Early Pro Cell seemed to have a dixcoloration problem if it was installed in an area that got a lot of reflected light and heat. Around a pool, you shouldn't have an issue with that since there probably isn't anything that the light or heat could reflect off of. Pro Cell says that they have fixed the problem.

I don't think that 'slippery' is going to be an issue with it. There is enough texture embossed into the surface to prevent that, and it is deep enough so that it won't be wearing off anytime soon.

I will be building a 1000 square foot deck soon also. If you find a company that sells Procell, in the West, let me know.

Procell has been bought out by Azek and is now called Azek deck with Procell technology. I contacted the Azek western regional sales manager and he said they do not have the product supply or distribution channels set up in California or the west. I don't know if you will have the same problem in Arizona as I am in California trying to get pricing and product. I've looked at several other cellular PVC decking materials and they all seem to have the same problem...nonexistant or little inventory and no distribution channels in the western states. Let me know if you find out otherwise because I would prefer to install Procell (now Azek) deck over composite material due to lower temperature, more scratch and stain resistant, and lighter than composites.

Good Luck!

dgbehrends,

Who paid the shipping??

Azek (formerly Pro Cell) is readily available thoughout northern CA. Meek's Lumber (about 15 stores in CA and NV) carries it, though it does have to be ordered at a few of their smaller stores.

It works better around a pool than most composites seem to. The water and the pool chemicals appear to get to the wood fiber in most composites after a while. Azek doesn't have the wood fiber.

Hi Lefty,
I paid the shipping for the Quadra (also known as Aurora) decking. I live in Rochester, MN. Quadra decking is a 100% PVC product and is manufactured and shipped from Hilliard, Ohio. I researched many composites and decided that PVC/Vinyl decking had more advantages than disadvantages for my installation. I decided not go with the Azek procell because it cost more than my budget could afford. I hope that answers your questions.
