I recently bought a kitchen table with a veneer top. The table and chairs are in great shape with the exceptions of small scratches and two small blue paint stains on the table itself. I was wondering if the entire table top must be refinished or is there a way to spot repair it. If I do indeed need to refinish it how do I go about it without damaging the veneer.

Depending on what type paint is on it, you may be able to loosen it with a cloth soaked lightly with MEK (Methyl Ethyl Keytone). It is not as flammable as lacquer thinner, but still use it in a ventilated area. After loosening it, try 000 steel wool over the entire veneer surface to lightly roughen it up a little and blend in the scratches somewhat. Then wipe it down and apply a good coat or two of Polyurethane.
