Hello I just moved into a rental home and I wanted to save some money this winter so I was going to use electric heaters instead of the furnace.
Can the furnace emit any toxic gases like Carbon Monoxide when it is off?
On the home's electric circuit breaker there's a breaker for the furnace, is it safe to turn this circuit off or should I just leave it on?
Is it safe to detach some of the furnaces duct work from a vent in the ceiling/floor boards?
The house also has a gas oven/range, and hot water heater. Will these give off lots of toxic gases like CO?

--- Only if there is a major malfunction in the unit. If you are not going to use the gas furnace, shut off the gas supply valve that should be going to it.

--- Keep it on, that circuit _may_ control other devices.
Is it safe to detach some of the furnaces duct work from a vent in the ceiling/floor boards?
--- Why do you want to do this? Remember, you don't own the property, ask the landlord. It won't be dangerous though..
The house also has a gas oven/range, and hot water heater. Will these give off lots of toxic gases like CO?
--- Again, only if there is a malfunction. Generally, if you have gas appliances, it's wise to purchase a CO detector.
Also, depending on location and types of electric heaters, you may spend way more money on your electric bill then you would gas.
