I wired a series of light fixtures following a well-known guide. The wire begins at the power source and proceeds to the first switch, then to the four light switches, then terminates at the end switch. When I first turned the breaker on, I verified power was present to all fixtures. However, I went to test the first switch, and when I turned it to the 'on' position, the breaker tripped. Troubleshooting suggestions????...

Sounds like you need to study the diagram more closely.
Two wiring methods commonly used as as follows.
12 or 14/2 power to first switch,12 or 14/3 to the first light fixture, 12 or 14/3 from the first light fixture to the second switch, 12 or 14/3 from the first light fixture to the other light fixtures, in a daisy chain pattern, that are to be controlled by the 3 way switches.
or
12 or 14/3 power to first light switch then 12 or 14/3 from the first light switch to the second light switch then 12 or 14/2 from the second light switch to the first light fixture, then 12 or 14/2 from the first light fixture to the other light fixtures to be controlled by the two three way switches.
Hope this helps
