HELP! A permanent marker was used to write my son's name on the bottom of a BORROWED toy (Buzz LightYear, to be exact). I've seen other posts suggesting WD40 for marker removal, but will that *or anything else* work on permanent marker and rubber?????

Most likely the rubber has absorbed the marker..making it permanent. Try writing over the name with a dry erase marker and then try wiping it off.

If the toy has a slick surface on the rubber, there is a good possiblity that the marker did not penetrate because of the "skin" on the rubber. Acetone will remove felt marker, but don't allow it to stay wet after removing the marker. It will also dissolve the rubber if it's on there two or three minutes. If the toy is plastic, just barely touch the surface with a rag dampened with acetone to lightly wipe away the marker. Any longer than that and bye bye toy!!

By the way, many of the fingernail polish removers are made with acetone!!

Naptha is the preferred solvent for permanent marker. Found in Oops! and many charcoal starting fluids.
