I have a few yellow pollen stains on my living room carpet near my sliding glass door. I'm planning on renting a steam cleaner to clean my carpets but I was wondering if there was anything I could use before I steam clean to remove the stains. I've tried resolve carpet cleaner and that didn't work, would peroxide, baking soda and water work?

First, cancel the steam cleaner - rental carpet cleaning machines lack sufficient power to extract chemicals and moisture from carpet. Line up a pro to clean your carpets.

Second, you need to get the resolve residue out of the carpet. Do this by rinsing with clean water and either extracting the water with a wet/dry vac or blotting it up with a clean white rag. unfortunately, the use of chemicals like resolve can set a stain in permanently, so your odds have gotten worse.

Peroxide may bleach your carpet, so I wouldn't use that. You could try to use some vinegar and baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda on your spots and then add vinegar. It will get all bubbly. I've used that combo to get rid of a lot of different stains on clothes.

The other product to try might be GONZO. You can get it at Linens & Things, it works great on MOST stains.

Hope you are successful!

ok ditto what mitch said....with all this being said.

I suggest calling a professional since you have tried all of this with no luck so far. The pH of the spot right now is most likely off the chart. Which can either set the stain or bleach the carpet. Mitch is right on when he said you have to rinse all that out. But during that step and then the step of trying something else..you are going to spread it.

A good professional cleaner will have a min charge in the area of 50-125 dollars..by the time you rent a machine, chemicals are you guessing time you will have more than that invested in it. So, as you can see it may be easier and better to just call a pro.

The pollen stain is a dye stain. Pollen on carpet and fabrics can usually be removed immediately with sticky tape or vacuum. Water or water-based cleaners should not be used as these set the dye. Now, it is up to a professional to remove the cleaner and the pollen stain.
