I have a yellow jacket nest in the middle of my front yard. Normally, I may be inclined to leave it be but I have a 18 month old who frequently plays in this area.

The entrance to the nest appears to be a 2-2.5" hole in the grass. I do not see any secondary entrances but will keep looking. The nest was not there 3 weeks ago (the last time I mowed this area) but has a good bit of activity around it now.

What is the best way to treat this nest? It is fairly close to my house and us under a large shad tree so gasoline is not a good solution.

Thanks for the assistance.

I have dealt with this very situation a few times, in fact, as recently as three days ago.
Wait until after dark, and have a flashlight, a few shovelfuls of dirt, and a can of Hornet/wasp/yellow jacket insecticide at the ready. Get your flashlight, find the hole, and spray the entire can down the hole. Try to aim the spray as deeply into the hole as possible. Next, fill in the hole with dirt, and pack it down.
This approach has worked well for me.
Good luck!
