I have purchased 5\16" thick, 2 1\4" wide solid hardwood. Most of the floor staplers I found shoots 15.5 or 16 gauge staples. Will this mess up my wood? I will going with installing a plywood subfloor over concrete attached with concrete fasteners. Most of the floor staplers I found, shoot 15.5 or 16 gauge staples. All of stapling information I've found for 3\4 solid hardwood. I recall someone mentioning that these 16g staples tend to split 5\16 solids. Is that true?

yes it will!
you'll need to purchase/rent or borrow a floor runner this is a smaller hand held stapler for installing 5/16 - 3/8 type of flooring if you find one that has a height adjusting foot use it as it will give you better fastening
