Hello - We are buying a house that has glossy paint on most of the plaster walls. There are small depressions/grooves/indentations, etc. in the walls that we'd like to patch before repainting. None of them are bigger than an inch or so across. The previous owner just painted over them. What is the best way to prepare these dents for a plaster patch? I'm concerned about the compound not adhering to the glossy paint. I'd appreciate any and all suggestions. Thank you!

A quick sanding of the affected areas with 120 grit [or coarser] should ready them to be filled with spackling or joint compound.
You will need to lightly sand the entire wall before painting. If the glossy paint is oil base you will need to either stay with oil enamel or coat the walls with a solvent base primer prior to paintign with latex.
