I removed a interior door and started to fill the screw holes,hinge cutouts,latch,etc with plastic wood to prepare for painting. The stuff just crumbles as i try to apply it. I would like to get nice smooth as posible buildup so i don't have to sand so much. The stuff i just bought is very similiar to plastic wood.
Anybody have some suggestions?

I've never cared for those types of wood fillers. I'd use durhams rock hard putty. It is a real bear to sand so use spackling or joint compound for the last application - it will sand easier :D

Any time I use wood putty I keep a little dish of water next to me, dip my fingers in and then use wet fingers to mush the wood putty where you need it. That little bit of water on the fingertips actually helps, at least for me. Good luck with your project.
