I have just moved into a home that has been unoccupied for a few months. The house's water is supplied from a well. I had a new toilet installed and because the water had not been frequently used it left a dark yellow stain in the toilet where the water sits. Is there any way I can remove the stain?

Shut off water supply to toilet. Flush. Use BarKeeper's Friend or Zud, both powdered cleansers containing rust remover, and apply paste of cleanser and water and let set. Use green Scotch Brite pad to scrub. Repeat applications may be necessary for complete removal. There are other products available such as CLR, Wink, Rust Away and others. Avoid bleach products as they tend to set iron stains.

Have well water tested to find out if it is safe and what minerals it contains. A filter or purifier may be required. Your local Health Dept. should be able to help you with water test. The EPA recommends annual testing.
