Using the dremel the other day, I noticed the collet / attachment was not spinning as fast as the motor. The attachment was secured in the collet. I could touch the collet and it would stop while the motor continued to run with no load.

I don't have the model number with me- it runs on 110 and it's called an "automotive tool"; I think it's an older unit.

I haven't taken it apart yet. Is this fixable? Anyone done this before?

Thanks

It is repairable. There's a flex coupler between the motor shaft and the collet shaft that will break if to much torque is applied to the tool tip. Any store or tool supply that sells dremels will have these replacement flex couplers, or they can order them for you.

I'll check it out, Tommy, thanks for your post. I was already looking into getting a new one, but I'd much rather fix this one.

Tommyj3 was right about the little safety flex drive tube in dremel and some sears handgrinders.

Here is what happened to me. I had purchased a extra flex connector when I replaced one that failed in my dremel previously and I remembered that so I looked it up and it was dry rotted and bad also . It just crumbled in my hand.
I went to several stores and no one seem to carry the part anymore..
I took a piece of clear plastic tubing I think 3/8 inch and about 1 inch long and forced it on the chuck end and then the motor end and put it back together and all worked fine.

My mother in law gave me this dremel after my father in law passed- he must have bought it forever ago because Dremel no longer had parts for it, and I searched the web and got nothing.

When I cracked the case there was a plastic knurled fitting that had dry rotted away- like you said, crumbled in my hand. I'll have to try force-fitting a connection, see if that will work. Thanks for the idea!
