I have a room that is 23'x32'. the 2x6 ceiling joists run across 23' width. there are also 2x6 rafters that the ceiling joists are attatched to by two 1x4's. the ceiling joists are sagging about one and a half inches in the middle and are pulling away at the ends. what options might i have at tackling this dilema? does it seem that 2x6's were too small for such a span?

What you have is old. You haven't mentioned an age, but it was probably built in the '50's, or before. The only real cure is going to be to go to engineered trusses. (The 1X4's were a dead give away!!)

It's extensive and will be a major project. Everything from the top plate of the walls up will have to be replaced.

You might want to consider a structural ridge beam if it's possible. That would need some architectural consideration as you'd need center supports for the ridge beam.

Talk to an engineer - it might be worth it as you need to find out the optimal (biggest bang for the buck) way to 'un-sag' your dillema.
