My wife and I are trying to remodel our kitchen, but in one corner the previous owners had installed some sort of fake brick finish to the walls. The "bricks" are just some sort of pressed paper and they have been embedded in some kind of black plaster. We would like to remove the bricks and plaster, but at the same time, do as little damage to the sheet rock that is underneath. Anybody have any ideas?

Sounds to me like the brick is glued on. The glue is usually black. If thats the case then almost impossible to not damage drywall. Try to pry them off with a stiff scraper or pry bar. If that doesnt work you will have to cut them out. Sorry.
