I have an old radio cabinet that I want to "clean up." The old varnish is cracked, some of the veneer is missing, and it's, in general, pretty dirty. I do not want to completely strip the piece, but want to take off the old varnish. Does anyone have any suggestions about what product I can use?

I use 'Circa 1850' Heavy Body Paint and Varnish Remover. It's gell like consistancy - brush or lay it on, let is go to work as it raises the old finish then you can wipe it off..or use a soft scraper to remove.
Works quite well without much hassle.
Be sure to mask off whatever you dont want treated..

Acetone is a solvent that can be used to remove a varnish slowly and have excellent control with how much finish you choose to remove. It will not remove the color from the wood and does not raise the grain of the wood.
Be extra careful when using acetone. Wear gloves and use it is a very well ventilated area. Acetone evaporates very quickly and is highly flammable.
Best of luck.
