I am trying to install a new fan/light with remote to replace a recessed can light in the bedroom. When I took out the can there were 2 romax cables attached to the box with only 1 black and 1 white attached to the corresponding black and white of the can. The 2 reds were capped, a black and a white on 1 romax was capped. After reading almost every post on this website regarding ceiling fans, I was confident that I could handle 1 romax with a black, a white, a red and a green. This is beyond me, I'll call a professional. However, I am very anxious to know how to deal with the 2 romax and why there are 2! The light switch at the wall only controlled the recessed light, but the romax in the attic seems to be going around the outside wall of the room. There is a second switch on the wall that controls the outlets around the room. I capped off all 6 wires separately and the switch controlling the outlets works fine. Is there a website that explains basic wiring that I could go to that would explain this situation? My curiosity has really gotten the best of me.

Your wires may or may not be Romex. Romex is a brand name. The proper term is NM cable. NM stands for non-metallic. The wiring could be some other type, but is usually NM.

If you want help, tell us what you want, and what you have.

Tell us what the present wiring is at the ceiling. Your post is NOT clear. Tell us what cables exist at the ceiling, and what wires exist in those cables. Tell us how those wires were connected to the previous light, or how they were connected to anything else, including other wires

Tell us what the present wiring is at the switch(es). Your post is NOT clear. Tell us what cables exist at the switch(es), and what wires exist in those cables. Tell us how those wires are/were connected to the previous switch, or how they are/were connected to anything.

Provide as much detail as possible.

This is how the light was connected and what was in the ceiling:
2 NM wires within a metal box attached to the joist. Each NM contained 1 black, 1 white, 1 red, 1 green.
1. The NM on my left had 1 black and 1 white joined and capped; 1 red joined and capped with the red from the right NM; and the green joined and capped the right NM green.
2. The NM on my right had the red connected to the left NM red; and the green connected to the left NM green. The black was connected to the light fixture black, and the white was connected to the light fixture white. Only this black and this white were connected to the old light fixture.

The operation I am looking for in the unit is:
Light controlled by the wall switch by the door
Fan controlled by the hand remote

My understanding from previous threads is to connect the new fixure exactly as the old fixture was.

If I connected the fan black to the Right NM black; and connect the fan white to the Right NM white (like the old light was connected), will that give me the fan light controlled at the wall and the fan controlled by the remote?

I have not looked into the wall switch yet. However, there are 2 switches on that plate: one controlled the ceiling light; one controlled the wall outlets (top only). There is no "On" or "Off" printed on the switch.
