I have taken a door down and taken off the hinges. Is there something more attractive than wood putty for filling in the area where the hinges were? Thanks

You could glue a very thin strip of wood matching the mortise on it. Then sand, fill gaps, and paint.

Just curious, but what are you trying to accomplish in the end?

We took a door down that we didn't really need or use that opened into a foyer area. The house was built in 1957 and it was a louvred door that really served no purpose. Removal opens up the foyer. I just wanted to know of a better way to finish off the hinge removal short of replacing the door facing. Thanks

A paint stir stick is often the right size [well close :D] to tack into the mortise. Spackle all the edges, sand and prime.

Use All Purpose Putty (Bondo for Wood). It is a 2 part putty that harden like a rock in a matter of minutes. You get it near to the depth you want, let it dry and sand to your finished depth. Make sure you let it dry completely, as it has a tendency to clog up the sandpaper if you sand too early. Prime and Paint to blend, no need to try to cut wood to size and glue it in. The patch will be hardly noticable when you are completed. Look for the stuff near the paint and glue dept. at the box stores.
