Where do I find the calculator or rule of thumb information for sizing a 12.0 ft and a 16.0 ft header (load bearing wall - single story home) using std lumber . I would also like to know sizing of the alternative material options ( LVL, DIY flitch beam etcs) . Thanks

Check at the library for "International Residential Code 2003" for one and two story dwellings. You can also browse the National Book Store chains and enjoy a coffee and danish while you gather the needed info. Look for it in the Home Improvement/Contractor section.
