I've never done a complete swirl texture job and only minor repairs on swirl texture. You can start by thinning down joint compound and practice texturing some cardboard with a brush. Hopefully better info will follow :D

We just got done doing something similar in one of our bathrooms. We got some textured compound paint stuff from Home Depot. We applied it to the walls like you would paint with a heavy looped roller cover. Once it sat on the walls for I think 10-20 minutes, we took a little stiff hand brush and made a pattern in it. It's hard for me to describe, but it came out great.
