In your expert opinion, what brand and type (top, bottom, side by side) of refrigerator would you recommend. If you know of a particular model, I would appreciate that information also. The only restriction I have in dimensions is the width must not exceed 34" and the height 70".

Depends on what you want. Ice & water through door? Side x Side. Just an icemaker? Top mount or bottom. Price-wise a top mount will be least expensive. I really have no preference on brands as long as they are american made. GE, Maytag, Whirlpool, Frigidaire. I believe they all still have a 5 year warranty on compressor & sealed system. Parts are widely available for any other minor repairs. I'd stay away from the oversea brands like LG or other strange names you never heard of before. I know I can't get parts from my supplier for them. I would also stay away from all the fancy electronics they are adding more often. They're nice when they work but very expensive to replace when they fail.

I have a GE, a similar model is still in production. Side x side, about 24 cu ft, ice/water through the door, slide out, 'spill proof' shelves, smart water filtration. I've had it well over 10 years. It cost me about $1400 and I've had no problems with it except for the broken ice crusher (replaced under warranty as there was a seal missing, letting the ice melt, then refreeze in the crusher mechanism).
I like to buy products that *I* can buy parts for right off a website, complete with diagrams. GE, Cub Cadet, Craftsman, etc.
