When I press the button on the remote to start the fan, the motor hums, but the blades don't spin. Any idea what could cause this?

If this is a new installation, check to see if something isn't binding
against the motor/shaft internally. If this is an older install, you
may have motor bushing problems. It sounds like you have power
to the motor but that something is binding and not allowing the
motor shaft to turn. Some fans have a switch that allows the
blades to turn clockwise or counter-clockwise. If so, see if changing
the switch position helps.

Is the wall switch on anykind of a dimmer or speed switch? Turn it all the way to high when using the remote.
Fan remotes are notorious for going bad.

The speed is controlled by remote only, and I've tried on high/medium/low without success
Ive also tried switching the direction the blades turn, to no avail
When the motor is "humming" I can push the blades around freely and they moved without resistance.
Over the last week, I could only turn it on full speed, then back it off to slow speeds. Going from stop to slow didn't work at all. Now I can't even get high speeds at all

The box stores carry replacement remote kits. They are fairly straight forward to install verify that it is compatible with your fan model. Also check the age of your fan, newer remotes are not compatable with some older fans. Check the upper housing of the main fan body to see if there is any markings related to replacement of the remote. The last one I did had a disclaimer sticker to "only replace with solid state..." or something like that.
If I was there I would probably perform some tests to see if the fan operated with the remote guts inside the fan removed to verify that the fan still worked on its own.
This is kind of a dumb question, but are the batteries in the remote new?

Could be that the fan's capacitors are shot.

I can't imagine why the remote would be an issue. It turns the light on and off just fine, and I can hear it changing the speed of the motor/the direction of the motor when I press the buttons on the remote as well--the blades jsut don't spin
