Just updated my dehumidifer with an energy star model, size 50 for a basement that is about 800 SF. It is often hard to find the setting that might equal say 45% so that once it does its job it goes off. Mine has an auto setting that is suppose to adjust fan etc.and I have it set for Max Dry which is just under constant run. I found this gets the humidity down to 45% which is where I like it in a basement and the unit giving off some heat while running generally moves the temp up a couple degrees. IS IS UNUSUAL FOR A DEHUMIDIFIER TO RUN CONSTANTLY? I AM NOT SURE HOW LOW THE HUMIDITY WILL DROP TO AT THIS SETTING BUT I HAVE NOT HEARD IT SHUT OFF ALTHOUGH THE BOOK SAYS THE CONDENSER DOES NOT RUN CONSTANTLY, THE FAN DOES. IF I SET IT AT THE DRY SETTING, IT DOES SHUT OFF BUT THE HUMIDITY LEVEL STAYS AROUND 55+ WHICH I THINK IS ALITTLE HIGHT, MAYBE NOT. I HAVE TO ASSUME THERE ARE MANY APPLICATIONS WHERE EVEN THOUGH THE UNIT IS NOT SET ON CONSTANT RUN THE UNIT WILL ALWAYS RUN TO MAINTAIN THAT 40-45%. HAVE A FAIR AMOUNT OF FURNITURE AND NEVER HAVE WATER PROBLEMS. YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE. I HOPE THIS IS A FAIR QUESTION, ONE ALWAYS GETS CONCERNED WHEN SOMETHING RUNS 24 HOURS A DAY......HOW LONG WILL IT LAST. MY LAST DEHUMIDIFIER WAS NOT ENERGY STAR WITH ELECTRONIC CONTROLS, DID SHUT OFF AND KICK ON A NUMBER OF TIMES A DAY BUT AM NOT SURE IT REALLY MAINTAINED THAT 45% EITHER AND IT WAS A 50 PINT.
WILL APPRECIATE SOME COMMENTS. GREAT WEBSITE.

If unit is under sized itl will run 24/7 to keep up with set point. If space temp is to low it will also run 24/7 to keep up.

Thanks for your response........had a 50 pint before and the unit did not run all the time but had to watch the settings when the temps got below 65 like in the fall or spring. This unit is also a 50 pint and being the area is only 800 Sqft, it really is more than ample according to the sizing chart. Presently the temp in the basement is about 71 degrees...........this really bothers me because based on past history, this should turn off I would suspect.
