I am trying to find out if you have to vent a chimney if I do use a gas fireplace insert?

It'll have to vent somewhere. If you're going to install an insert in a formally wood burning FP, as we did, the installers ran 4" (I believe) round flexi aluminum duct up the brick chimney - actually 2 in out case, because we needed air intake and exhaust.
Without that venting, gases will permiate thru the old creosote coated brick and could be a hazard.

The chimney was not brick but 8" metal duct all the way up thru the roof.

Then I wouldnt think you'd have a problem..unless of course the 8" is too large for the exhaust of your chosen insert, which, I think, (up here anyway) is usually 4". They, the installers may have to run a 4" line up, inside the existing 8" duct.. - but that Im not qualified to say.
