I would like to know if anyone knows how to achieve the look of layers of paint on furniture. It's for a distressed look. The final look appears like there was chipped paint (or bubbled) all over the piece and then it was painted over with a topcoat color. There are no other colors that show through the top layer. The only look/feel is the chipped paint underneath. Pieces I have seen have been antiqued after the top layer of paint is done.

Just a guess here, since I haven't done it in 30 years. I believe if you try to paint lacquer over enamel it will create a crackling affect. (I did this on a car LOL, not on purpose!).
I suppose you could paint sections different colors, then paint over them, then rub off the top layer to expose the color below.

Thanks for the response. Were you able to salvage the car finish! I think I may try a crackle finish and then paint over that again. I am working with wood. With crackle usually you want the layer below to show through the cracks. The effect I am looking for is totally covered in one color but the underlayers are "lumpy" and then it has a glossy finish. Like so many other things I try it's experiment, experiment, experiment!
