Hi!

Please tell me if I'm correct on this -- I'm replacing the ceiling fan (with light kit) with a new light fixture (no fan). There are two wiring cables coming out of the box, one has a black wire and bare wire (ground?) and the other has a black, a white and a bare (which is connected to the other bare wire).

This is what I think I should do and if I'm wrong, please set me straight!

Separate the two bare wires; Connect the black and white and ground (all coming from the same cable) to the new fixture; and tape off the black and bare wires coming from the other cable.

If what you are say is true, then someone setup an improper connection.

The proper solution, of course, is to use the same two wires that the previous light was connected to.

At any rate, leave the bare wires as they are and connect them to the box (if metal) and to the ground of the light.

Use the black and white from the one cable, and cap the other cable. One of the switches should control this light.

If it is two cables then you have missed a white wire. They don't make cable with only black and bare wires.

Dang need to wait 29 seconds. Posting too fast.

I suspect that someone used a cable for the sole purpose of the black wire, and they either cut off or folded back the white wire.

Seems to be the case, once again, where someone was too lazy or too cheap to run three conductor (plus ground) cable.

I hope that we don't have the case where the hot and the neutral are from different circuits. Perhaps an investigation of the wiring at the switch is in order. Micha, please investigate the wiring at the switch and report back on what you find.
