I was riding my 1987 honda helix 250 to work this morning and as I was coming to a stop at a stopsign, the power cut out and I thought it was going to die. The engine stayed alive, just barely idling. It was idling very slowly, to the point where I thought it would die. When I gave it gas it idled at the same speed, just louder. It was just barely coughing. And it wouldn't move another inch. I let it rest a minute and started it again and the same thing. Any hints? Thanks!

It sounds like the drive assembly is locked up on the motor side. At idle a drive of that type is essentially in neutral. But as you give it more throttle it engages, but the engine can't rev up linked to the bad drive. The noise you hear is intake noise associated with the greater throttle opening.
I'm not familiar with all the design details of what you're dealing with, but I believe I'm in the ballpark.
Hope this helps,
Bob
