Kitchen Large Electric Appliances - Remove dial from kenmore laundry center

I have a 6 year young Kenmore stacked Laundry Center that apparently needs the washing machine timer replaced. I can see from the blow-up diagram that there are screws behind the dial but for the life of me I can't figure out the trick to remove the dials. I have everything disassembled and have the replacement timer. It appears that the shaft has a clip at the end that holds the outer knob in place but I just don't see how to release the clip. I've popped out the center shaft through the back which I thought would release it, but no luck.

So, what's the trick.....

See if the knob spins backward, it may thread off.
