My GE dryer makes a terrible noise that has gotten worse over the last week or so. However, once it warms up the noise quiets. Any suggestions on how to quiet the machine? Thanks

what does it sound like. any squealing sounds or burning rubber smell. If so then the drive belt is going.

No burning smell. Noise is like high pitched fingernails on a chalk board.

You'd have to go into the machine. It is something with what is turning the dryer obviously: Rear bearing. Rollers (if not a rear bearing model). Motor bearing. Idler (tensioner) wheel. Worn at front guides.

If your dryer has a like 8-10 inch square louvered access panel at the rear, you could remove that and look/hear if the sound is coming from down by the motor/tensioner area.

And as long as you have the dryer pulled out from the wall, you could see if your model has the rear support bearing. If it does, about dead center inthe back of the machine you will see about a 1/2 inch x 3 inch piece of metal that has 2 screws through it and in the middle is a tiny ball bearing inside this little metal flap. If you have this, see if that area is where the sound is coming from.
