Hello,
I am having a problem that I have never experienced before in installing track lighting. I am replacing an old chandelier that is on a dimmer switch. When I took down the old fixture I noticed that it was wired using only the white and green ceiling wires (the black ceiling wire was not connected).
The new track lighting fixture has a white, black and green wire. I then looked and found a set of twisted black wires in the ceiling receptacle and connected this to the black wire of the track light. I then connected white with white and green with green. The result was that the track lighting turned on but the dimmer switch had no effect. The track lighting remained constantly on and would not dim or turn off.
I have no idea how the original fixture worked properly but I would appreciate any advice regarding how to properly wire the new track light. Is the wiring different for a dimmer switch, especially considering the previous fixture never even used the black ceiling wire?
Thanks in advance.

Tell us ALL the wires at the ceiling and at the switch. Tell us what cables exist (or what sections of conduit), what wires are in those cables and conduit and how those wires are connected to anything.
You will need to wire a switch loop, which someone before you wired incorrectly. We need to figure out if you have the proper wires to do this or if you will need to run more.
