We moved into a new (to us) house that has a dinky little lamp post in the middle of the yard. How to I go about removing it, and is there a way I can cap off the electrical at the light post site instead of having to rip up the yard?

You can cut the cable at ground level, but you also must disable and render unusable the other end supplying the power. Identify where this cable enters the house, and where is gains its power. Again, you must render that cable unusable.

At the house, unusable means that the cable must be removed from whatever box it enters. That means pushed out of the box and cut off.
