I just recently replaced a old mercury thermostat with a Rite Temp 8029b digital thermostat. The room temperature never falls below 80 on the thermostat and I have it set to kick in if the room temp gets above 78 meaning the ac runs constant. This did not happen with the old thermostat. Could the new one be broken? Should I set it to like 84-86? That would seem rather hot to me. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Set a thermometer on the new t-stat to confirm weather or not the new one is reading correctly or not. The t-stat has nothing to do with getting the temp to set point. It is simply a switch to turn the a/c on and off.
