i have read through the post and have not found my problem. The fan inside is running, the fan out side is running, every minute or so it will sound like the compressor is turning on but will not it will go right off. I checked the voltage and ohmed all wires every thing looks good but it will not turn on. it is a lenox air conditioner about 9 years old the compressor has a 10 year warrenty but i want to make sure it is the compressor.
thanks

Need more info. What are your suction and liquid line pressures. Are the coils on the condenser and evaporator clean? ( You can't look and tell, try to get them clean if you have any doubt.) What was the resistance readings from C-S C-R @R-S and what is the amp draw on the compressor when it does try to start

as far as pressures i have no idea. I have everything clean just to make sure i cleaned everything very well. I didnt do any resistance readings i just checked voltage and ohmed every wire to make sure they were good.what is c-s c-r @r-s and where do i check the amp draw? i have the compaster out now im going to have it checked tomorrow. at the compressor it has 240 volts on two leg the red and purple is this correct. and it is turning on and off so fast the meter cant get a reading on the yellow.

Id start with the capacitor there first. Where the wires tight on the compressor???? The main thing to Ohm out on the compressor is the terminals to ground. You can check the Amp draw on one of 220V wires going to the condenser unit. The Model plate should tell you what it should be

ok changed capacitor and it is doing the same thing. all the wirs are tight what can i check now. I checked the compressor is under warrenty but i have to pay to have it installed. How much is this going to run and can i di it myself?

Sorry, but I don't think you have the tools for the job. Also, a compressor change out is not for a beginner. It's a fair amount of work even for a seasoned technician.
At this point, much further testing (including the items the previous posts mentioned) is needed before the compressor is condemned.
