Contactor on outside unit of A/c Heat pump has gradually been emitting a buzzing, louder and louder. A/c is cooling fine. Wondering if this contactor is about to go, or maybe I just need a spring or something. If replacing the contactor is advised, is that simple enough for a diy'er?

Replace the contactor. It's an easy job if you have some electrical skills.

Like said its a DIY Take it with you so you get the right coil and points in the new one. Mark down how the wires go. Turn the power off to the outside and inside units.
