yesturday around 2pm my goodman central air unit froze up. the big copper pipe coming from the outside unit was frozen and i had very little air coming from the vents. i shut the unit down, let it thaw out, turned it back on and a little while later it froze again, so i turn it off for the rest of the day. this morning i turned it back on and it seems to be doing fine, temps are good, and air flow is good. what gives?? is it because its not yet real hot outside, does that have something to do with it? thanks.

The system could be low on charge or poor air flow..
Did you check/change your air filter?
Any supply/return vents get blocked off?
If the system is low on charge, it will take a few hours to build up frost to block off the air flow. If it freeze up on your again, shut it down, and call for service.

Air filter should be new every 30 to 90 days. Dont just try and clean them. Check the big copper line should be cold and wet, small copper line warm to hot. At the outdoor unit when running. This can help tell you if the freon charge is right

Agree with everyone else...... Freezing up is not normal. Call a technician before you trash your compressor.

i always replace the air filter (never have tried to clean them). air filter is about a week old, big pipe is a little cold, not wet. small one is slightly warm.
unit did fine today, no freezing up or anything. strange...........

Freezing-up does not happen instantly, it takes time, sometimes hours. If the system is only running for a little while because the outdoor temperature is not very high, you may not notice the problem. I can guarantee, it will freeze-up again if allowed to run longer (such as a hotter day). The problem did not fix itself. Freeze-ups place the compressor in great danger.
