I have a whirpool washer Model LSR8233EQ1. This is a direct drive unit that is about 10 years old with heavy use. Today the machine will not spin or agitate. The washer will fill, then when it's time to agitate the motor engages and runs making a loud noise when running. Then during spin, the pump drains the tub and the motor engages and runs with the same loud noise but the basket does not spin. Does this sound like a gear case, clutch, both or something different?

I am able to manually spin the agitator freely without resistance. When I manually spin the basket It does spin smoothly, but there is a great deal of resistance.

Sounds like a broken motor coupling. Check out this link (you will need to cut and paste):

An inexpensive, do-it-yourself repair.

GDoug -

Thanks for the help - I took the washer apart just as the link instructed - what a big help! The coupler is in fact broken and I found the part locally for under $20...
