I had always associated Whirlpool with window units and cannot find any opinions on their heatpumps. I am trying to decide between the Whirlpool 14 seer variable heat pump and the Lennox 13 seer (13HPD) model.
The Whirlpool is about $500 less but comes with a 10 year warranty.
Any advice would be appreciated as about the only thing I know about a/c
is that it feels good when it's working.

Higher SEER, less money, 10 year warranty. I can't say that I would hesitate.

If you think you are going to stay in this home for 10 years. First I go for a Trane or Lennox over the a Whirlpool anytime. Also as you are going for a new unit. You want to go for a seer of 15 or over. That way you can get the IRS tax credit for it. They can come with the 10 year warranty.

I think they are now made by Nordyne. Personally, I don't think there is a nickels worth of difference in the equipment regardless of brand. Installation is the key. 95% installation, 5% equipment.
17 years ago I installed the cheapest thing made in my own house. Repairs to date? $0. Routine maintenance? Keep filters clean & wash down outdoor unit a couple of times a year (if I think of it).

WHIRLPOOL: In 1972 became Whirlpool Div. of Heil-Quaker, a subsidiary of Whirlpool Corp. Tempstar name replaced Whirlpool after Inter-City Gas Co. bought Heil-Quaker in 1986. See Heil-Quaker.
HEIL-QUAKER: Purchased by Inter City Gas, Toronto, from Whirlpool Corp. Tempstar name added to replace Whirlpool name. HVAC division now part of International Comfort Products. In 1999, ICP was purchased by United Technologies. (That is Carrier)
Lots of changes in product names over the years.
Partial list at this site kinda interesting http://toad.net/~jsmeenen/history.html

I was thinking of Westinghouse, Frigidaire, Tappan, & Gibson. All of those are now made by Nordyne. It has been forty forevers since I've seen any new equipment with the Whilpool name on it other than window shakers.
