Hello everyone, I stumbled across this forum in search of what to do. I want to put a lock-top damper/cap on my fireplace and called a fireplace company to look and they want to charge $1200. I think I can do this myself for about $300.00. Only holdup is, my flue tile needs to stick up about 1 1/2" above the crown and I'm not sure how to go about building it up. Can somebody give me some info on doing this. Thanks in advance.

You can do it for 3-400 bucks, but you can also burn down your house or break your neck. First some questions.
What is the problem with your normal damper. Is it rotten or simply non-existant?
How old is the firebox, and what is the size? What is the size of the flue?
How tall is the stack? How tall is the chimney above the roofline?
